Knee Immobilizer Design Project

Introduction to Engineering

A water-ready knee immobilizer was developed in multiple sizes for pediatric patients with cerebral palsy undergoing physical hydrotherapy at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC). This was one of my first engineering projects with real clients undertaken under the direction of my Engineering Design and Communication course in 2011.

The immobilizer was manufactured using a bandsaw and sewing machine. It used cut PVC to prevent a child's leg from bending while also providing support so they could stand. 10, 13 and 16-inch versions meant physical therapists could use them on children of at least 3 years of age.
